Mel Kiper Jr.’s 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Ranking Kiper’s Biggest Blunders

When it comes to the wacky world of NFL draft scouting, ESPN’s Mel Kiper, Jr. stands out.

First, he stands out because he’s wackier than most. Second, well, he’s Mel Kiper, Jr. He’s been dealing in NFL draft knowledge for a long time. When he has something to say about the draft, people shut up and listen.

But this does not mean Kiper is beyond criticism. He knows his stuff, but he’s not perfect. Especially not when it comes to his mock drafts. Every time he comes out with a new mock, a few picks stand out as being a little ridiculous.

Kiper’s latest mock?(ESPN Insider required)?was released on March 7th, meaning it’s a little dated at this point. Free agency has changed things drastically, and has made some of Kiper’s selections obsolete.

But a handful of the decisions Kiper made still stand out as being highly questionable. Here’s a rundown of the ones that I have issues with.

?

5. Kansas City Chiefs pick Luke Kuechly at No. 11

Yes, the Chiefs could use a good inside linebacker. And no, I don’t have a problem with Luke Kuechly.

But the Chiefs have bigger needs than inside linebacker. Their offensive line needs a boost, and they could stand to add some pieces to their defensive line. The Chiefs need to make sure they’re set in the trenches before they can go chasing other needs.

There are going to be options for the Chiefs at No. 11, especially if they decide to go for an offensive lineman. As many as five offensive tackles could go in the first round this season, and a couple of them will be in play for the Chiefs when they’re on the clock.

Finding defensive line help, particularly a new nose tackle, will not be as easy, but I don’t think they would pass on Michael Brockers, who Kiper has going to Philadelphia Eagles at No. 15.

The Chiefs wouldn’t be reaching for Kuechly if they took him, but they would be ignoring bigger fish that need frying.

4. St. Louis Rams pick Morris Claiborne at No. 6

Morris Claiborne is an outstanding athlete who projects as an elite cover corner. He’s not falling out of the top 10 on draft day, even despite? The Times-Picayune‘s report that Claiborne needs wrist surgery.

At the time Kiper did his mock, Cortland Finnegan had not yet signed with the Rams, so Kiper had no way of knowing that the Rams were just days away from landing a solid No. 1 cornerback. If he’d known the Rams were going to sign Finnegan, Kiper probably would have changed things around.

However, even before the Rams signed Finnegan, cornerback was a secondary need compared to their need for a stud wide receiver, defensive line help and offensive line help. Instead of having the Rams going for the value pick, Kiper could have had them going for Michael Floyd, Dontari Poe, Michael Brockers or Riley Reiff.

Claiborne won’t be a bad pick if the Rams happen to end up with him, but he wouldn’t do the Rams much good if Sam Bradford’s receiver options and protection are still weak, and their rush defense is still full of holes. Making sure those two areas are taken care of is of paramount importance for the Rams.

3. New England Patriots pick Janoris Jenkins at No. 31

I disagree with this pick for two reasons.

The first reason is because Jenkins is too talented to go as low as No. 31. He’s got more upside than Dre Kirkpatrick and Stephon Gilmore, both of whom are already off the board by the time the No. 31 pick rolls around in Kiper’s draft.

Second, I’m not sold on the idea that the Pats would be willing to take a chance on Jenkins knowing his character issues. Kiper argues that New England’s locker room would be a great environment for Jenkins, but that doesn’t mean the Patriots feel the same way. Kiper’s decision to mock Jenkins to the Patriots felt awfully forced.

I’ll put it this way: there’s no way Jenkins is ending up with the Pats on draft day. You can take that to the bank.

2. Cleveland Browns pick Justin Blackmon at No. 4

Why on earth would the Browns pass on Trent Richardson to draft Justin Blackmon?

The Browns need a running back way more than they need a wide receiver. And between Richardson and Blackmon, Richardson is the prospect with the higher upside. He’s the best running back to come along in years.

Also, Blackmon is a little too similar to Greg Little, who was pretty solid in his rookie season in 2011. The Browns don’t need a big-bodied?possession?receiver. They already have one.

I’m not ruling out the Browns taking a wide receiver later in the draft, but I don’t see them taking Blackmon over Richardson. The only way they’re taking Blackmon is if Richardson is off the board, and that’s not going to happen.

1. No Jonathan Martin in the First Round

I didn’t notice it at first, but Jonathan Martin is nowhere to be found in the first round of Kiper’s latest mock.

This just doesn’t make any sense. Matt Kalil is the best offensive tackle in the draft, but then it’s a tossup between Riley Reiff and Martin. One could go before the other, but there’s no way either one of them is falling out of the first round altogether.

Talent is a big reason why, but the other big reason is that there are a lot of teams that are going to be on the lookout for a top offensive tackle in the first round. Kiper takes care of most of them, but Martin could have gone to a number of different teams that Kiper assigned other players to. For example, I don’t think the Steelers would pass on Martin if he fell into their lap at No. 24.

Evidently, Kiper is not a big fan of Martin. He needs to change that.

Landmark case: Villagers sue Shell over oil spills

Pius Utomi Ekpei / AFP – Getty Images, file

A man walks near spilled crude oil in the Niger Delta swamps of Bodo, a village in the Nigerian oil-producing region of Ogoniland, in June 2010.

By F. Brinley Bruton, msnbc.com

LONDON — Around 11,000 Nigerian villagers who say their livelihoods were ruined in oil spills launched a legal battle?Friday to seek compensation from Royal Dutch Shell.

The case marks the first time any oil firm has?faced claims in the U.K. from a community?in?the developing world?for environmental damage caused by oil extraction operations, the villagers’?lawyers said.

Shell, the largest international firm operating in Nigeria, admitted liability for two?oil spills in August 2011. However, the two sides dispute the amount of oil spilled and?the?extent of the damage?caused, one of the villagers’ London-based?lawyers told msnbc.com.

At the crux of the disagreement is whether the spills that devastated the area were due to so-called operational failures on the part of Shell, or if they were the result of sabotage, illegal refining and theft.

Farmers, fishermen
Shell Petroleum Development Company?(Nigeria) has admitted responsibility for two spills amounting to around 4,000 barrels.?

However, experts representing people in the Bodo community, a network of 35 villages whose inhabitants were mainly subsistence fishermen and farmers, maintain that amount is closer to 600,000 barrels, one of the villagers’ lawyers told msnbc.com.

100 miles of oil: Spill likely Nigeria’s worst in decade

“We have urged them to have their expert work with our expert,” said Martyn Day of law firm Leigh Day & Co. “But (Shell has) totally refused.”

Day said that negotiations broke down last week.

‘No need for the legal activity’
Shell spokesman Jonathan French told msnbc.com that the firm cannot discuss details of the legal process, but said the company was dismayed that the case was going to court.

“There really has been no need for the legal activity which has delayed the the payout and cleanup,” he said. “We accepted responsibility at the earliest point we could … there was no need for this firm of London solicitors to take action.”

PhotoBlog: Nigerian oil industry photos reveal extremes of poverty, wealth

“Nobody is saying is that there isn?t a problem with oil spills in the Niger Delta,” French added. “The point is that there is this formula enshrined in Nigerian law that spells out level of compensation.”

Instead of resorting to court, the villagers should have followed the process already in place in Nigeria, French said, adding that the involvement of law firms such as Leigh Day “can serve to delay compensation.”

$1 billion cleanup tab in Nigeria oil mess, UN says

Shell paid out $4 million in compensation to victims of operational oil spills in 2009, and $1.7 million in 2010, French said.

Shell has been criticized for its behavior in Nigeria before.

In Aug. 2011, the United Nations released a report saying the company and the Nigerian government had contributed to 50 years of pollution in the Niger Delta that could need the world’s largest ever oil cleanup. The work would take up to 30 years and require an initial tab estimated at $1 billion, the report said.

On February 17, Amnesty International issued a report saying that:

“Shell’s failures persist despite significant evidence based calls on the company to make meaningful changes in the way it operates in the Niger Delta. In 2011 the evidence confronting Shell was confirmed in a ground-breaking study by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that looked at the impact of oil pollution in the Ogoniland region of the Niger Delta. The UNEP report confirmed that serious environmental damage had occurred in Ogoniland, one area of the Niger Delta, over many years. It found systemic failures in Shell?s approach to cleaning up pollution and rehabilitating land, which have exposed tens of thousands of people to a sustained assault on their economic, social and cultural rights.”

Runaway planets ejected from galaxy at insane speeds

New evidence suggests that planets are being tossed out of the Milky Way at speeds comparable to the speed of light.

Planets in tight orbits around stars that get ejected from our galaxy may actually themselves be tossed out of the Milky Way at blisteringly fast speeds of up to 30 million miles per hour, or a fraction of the speed of light, a new study finds.

“These warp-speed planets would be some of the fastest objects in the galaxy, aside from photons and?particles like cosmic rays,” said Avi Loeb, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. “In terms of large, solid objects, they would be the fastest. It would take them 10 seconds or so to cross the diameter of the Earth.”

In 2005, astronomers found evidence of a runaway star that was flying out of the?Milky Way galaxy?at a speed of 1.5 million mph (2.4 million kph). This hypervelocity star was part of a double-star system that wandered too close to the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The strong gravitational pull at the galactic center ripped the stars apart, sending one hurtling through space at high speeds, while capturing the other to stay in orbit around the massive black hole.

In the seven years since, 16 of these?hypervelocity stars?have been found, and Loeb and his colleagues began to wonder whether planets could also be sent tearing through space at such extreme velocities.

The researchers created simulations that examined what would happen if each star had at least one planet orbiting nearby. They found that up to 10 percent of planets tightly orbiting one of the stars could stay bound as the?star is flung outward. The other star that is captured by the black hole could also have its planet ripped away from it, and this planet would then be pitched into interstellar space at intensely fast speeds as well.

“We were trying to predict, if you have planets around each of the stars in the binary system, what fraction of the planets might go along with the hypervelocity star for the ride,” Loeb told SPACE.com. “What we found is that some of them get expelled at high speeds, up to a few percent of the speed of light. Some of the planets get ripped apart from the host stars and get sent out at high speeds, and they also become hypervelocity planets this way.”?

These planets would travel through space at unparalleled velocities, the researchers said.

Bahrain police install cameras to curb abuse

MANAMA (Reuters) – Bahrain is installing video cameras in police stations to try to clean up its human rights image after crushing a pro-democracy uprising last year, but activists say off-camera abuse continues in other locations.

At al-Hoora station in Manama, closed circuit television will record police interrogations in rooms with padded grey walls. Rooms without cameras are set aside for detainees to consult lawyers. Other areas of the station are also monitored.

“We chose the color grey because it’s an international standard and it calms people. Anyone in a state of violence has to be calmed down,” said Brigadier Mansour Alhajeri, a police officer conducting a tour for journalists.

He said seven other stations were now being fitted with the monitoring system and all 33 stations would be covered by October.

But the cameras, introduced after an inquiry led by international jurists uncovered five deaths under torture last year, will not be installed in at least five riot police bases where activists say youths have been beaten.

“They don’t detain anyone, any arrests will be handed over to police,” police chief Tareq al-Hassan said when about the absence of cameras in the bases from where riot police using jeeps and armored vehicles move to handle protests.

The United States, which sees Bahrain as an ally in its conflict with Iran, has held up arms sales, including anti-tank missiles and armored humvees, until the Gulf island state shows progress in implementing human rights reforms.

Bahrain has been in turmoil for over a year as opposition parties dominated by the Shi’ite majority population demand an end to the Al Khalifa family’s hold on power and Shi’ite youths clash daily with Sunni-dominated riot police, many of them foreign hires.

Banking, tourism and real estate have slowed as the unrest scares off investors and strains the economy, while the clashes have intensified in the past three months.

Police say they show restraint in the face of rioters who attack them with petrol bombs and iron bars, damaging vehicles and wounding personnel.

But opposition and rights activists say 32 civilians have died since June, many from the effects of tear gas or direct hits by tear gas canisters and sound bombs.

The government questions the causes of death and their attribution to the political conflict.

The U.N. High Commission on Human Rights said this week it was concerned about a disproportionate use of force and excessive use of tear gas and would investigate the death toll.

OFF-CAMERA BEATINGS?

Bahraini rights activists list three informal detention centers where Shi’ite youths are beaten up by riot police before release, while others are beaten in the street.

“More than 160 people have been beaten in these places,” said Mohammed al-Maskati, head of the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights, naming one site as a youth hostel in Sanabis which police acknowledge has been transformed into a riot police base.

Maskati said abuse had moved out of the range of cameras.

“In the past four months I never heard of anyone abused in a police station. They are hit before they reach there, that is the technique they use now,” he said, citing 10 teenagers mistreated in an unused building in Dar al-Kulaib this week.

A 16-year-old was abducted on Wednesday in Sanabis and found unconscious several hours later with his hands tied, underpants removed and trousers pulled down. His family filed a complaint to public prosecutors, blaming plainclothes detectives.

The interior ministry said it was investigating the incident.

John Timoney, a former Miami police chief hired to advise on the reforms, acknowledged that monitoring of detainees before they arrive in police stations was a relevant concern.

“If an arrest is effected, they should be taken to the nearest police station in that area. I take your point – police officers are directed to take them to the nearest police station,” he said when questioned at a news conference.

He added: “If anybody has any information on secret locations of that nature, we want to hear it.”

World News – French authorities: Explosions turn up pressure on …

French police are demanding the surrender of Mohamed Merah, the suspect who allegedly shot seven people and then bragged of bringing France to its knees. NBC’s Jim Maceda reports.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 11:01 p.m. ET: TOULOUSE, France ??Three large explosions were heard late Wednesday at the siege of a suspect wanted in the killings of?three Jewish children, a rabbi and three soldiers, but there were reports that the blasts were an attempt to pressure the man to surrender and did not signal the start of an assault.?

Toulouse Deputy Mayor Jean-Pierre Havrin had said that negotiations with the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Mohammed Merah, had ended and an assault had begun.

But there were conflicting reports that authorities had blown open the apartment doors and windows in an attempt to pressure Merah to give up.

“They were moves to intimidate the gunman who seems to have changed his mind and does not want to surrender,” Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told Reuters. “There is no assault.”

Orange flashes lit up the night sky near the?suspect’s building as the first explosions were heard.

More than an hour later, several loud bangs were heard at the site.

Police reinforcements had arrived at the scene at around 10 p.m. and authorities switched off street lights in the street, signaling that action would begin soon.

The suspect wounded three police officers when the standoff began at 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said earlier that Merah had told police that he would surrender after dark. Gueant said Merah appeared to have acted alone in the killings — but also claimed to authorities that he met al-Qaida “chiefs” while traveling in Pakistan last year.

Merah,?under siege by hundreds of police officers, claimed to be a member of al-Qaida and that he had shot dead the four out of “revenge for Palestinian children.” He is also suspected by authorities of having killed three French soldiers of North African origin last week.

French prosecutor Francois Molins?said Merah, a Frenchman of Algerian descent,?told police he had been to Afghanistan twice and had trained in the militant stronghold of Waziristan.

Molins also said Merah had planned to kill another soldier and two police officials imminently, and that his brother had been implicated in a network sending fighters to Iraq.

Police sources earlier told Reuters that another man had been arrested earlier Wednesday at a separate location in connection with the case.

Several hours after the initial raid, which took at about 3 a.m. local time Wednesday (10 p.m. ET Tuesday),?the alleged gunman threw a pistol out the window in exchange for a “communication device.” However,?he was?believed to have other weapons including an AK-47 assault rifle.

The suspect said he would surrender in the late evening “to be more discreet,” although he had earlier promised to give himself up during the afternoon.

“He claims to be a mujahedeen and to belong to al-Qaida,” Gueant told journalists in Toulouse. “He wanted revenge for the Palestinian children and he also wanted to attack the French army because of its foreign intervention.”

Remy De La Mauvinere / AP

?

France 24?reported that Merah?had been tracked by French intelligence services for several years.

An earlier Reuters report that Merah escaped in 2008 from Kandahar prison, where he had been serving a three-year sentence, was retracted by the news agency. Kandahar governor’s office said that account was “baseless”, citing judicial records. “Security forces in Kandahar have never detained a French citizen named Mohammad Merah,” the governor’s spokesman, Ahmad Jawed Faisal, said.

Citing prison documents, Kandahar prison chief Ghulam Faruq had told Reuters that Afghan security forces detained Merah on December 19, 2007, and that he was sentenced to three years in jail for planting bombs in the southern province of Kandahar, the Taliban’s birthplace.

‘God is testing us’
As the siege continued, the Haaretz newspaper reported?that thousands of people had gathered at the Har HaMenuchotcemetery in Jerusalem Wednesday for a joint funeral service for the victims, Rabbi Jonathan Sandler and his two sons, Gabriel, aged six, and Arieh, three, and Miriam Monsonego, aged eight.

“Our hearts are with the Jews of France and with the Ozar Hatorah institutions that took such a hard and painful blow. The pain is unimaginable, God is testing us,”?Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai said in his eulogy, according to the paper.

PhotoBlog: Funeral for school shooting victims held in Israel

President Nicolas Sarkozy, campaigning for re-election in a presidential poll in five weeks time, has blamed racism for Monday’s school attack. His handling of the crisis could be a decisive factor in determining how the French people vote. France has troops in Afghanistan as part of NATO forces.

“Terrorism will not divide France,” Sarkozy said.?”We should not give way to discrimination or vengeance after shootings.”

Gueant?did not say how?authorities had tracked Merah down.

However, a Le Figaro correspondent at the?site of raid reported that police received key tip from a local motorcycle shop in Toulouse a few days ago, according to NBC News. A salesperson?said a man came into the shop to ask how to neutralize the GPS system on his TMX scooter. The salesperson?thought this was?suspicious and reported incident to police, giving a?description of the suspect.

Gueant said that when police arrived?to raid the house?”the wanted individual shot at the door.” NBC News reported the officers were members of an elite team known as RAID.

All French shooting victims shot in the head at close range, prosecutor says

One officer was injured in the knee and another officer lightly injured in ensuing exchanges of gunfire, Gueant said. A third officer was later reported to have been hurt.

Heavily armed police in bullet-proof vests and helmets cordoned off the area where the raid was taking place, in a suburb?only about 2?miles from the Ozar Hatorah Jewish school where Monday’s shootings took place. NBC News reported that 300 officers were participating in the operation.

Suspect’s mother called in
Merah’s mother, elder brother and two sisters were detained by police on Tuesday and negotiators sought their help in trying to persuade him to turn himself in to the authorities.

“His mother said she did not wish to speak to him because she did not believe she could convince him and he would be deaf to her appeals,” Gueant said.

The suspect inside the house said that he trained in the Pakistan and Afghanistan?and is affiliated with Forca lesa, an Islamic group dismantled by the French government. The group, which recruits young French to join the jihad,?is?considered?to be?dangerous.

On Tuesday, hundreds of?police officers?had spread out across southern France in the hunt for the gunman suspected in three deadly attacks.

Authorities suspect the school killer was also behind two recent attacks in the same area on French paratroopers that left three soldiers dead and one seriously wounded. The victims were of North African and French Caribbean backgrounds.

A tense standoff unfolds in Toulouse, France, between police and the man suspected in a string of deadly shootings, including one at a Jewish school that killed three children and a rabbi.

Sarkozy described the killer as a “monster.”

“There are beings who have no respect for life. When you grab a little girl to put a bullet in her head, without leaving her any chance, you are a monster. An anti-Semitic monster, but first of all a monster,” he said.

Monday’s incident was?the deadliest school shooting in the country and the bloodiest attack on Jewish targets in decades. Schools across the country held a moment of silence Tuesday to honor the victims, who were heading to Israel for burial.

Gueant described the suspect as “someone very cold, very determined, very much a master of his movements, and by consequence, very cruel.”

NBC News, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
